The distinct architecture of the Panagia Paraportiani Church has made it one of the most famous and most photographed churches in this island. Situated in the neighborhood of Kastro, in the town of Chora, it consists of five other churches attached all together. The construction of the church was started in 1425 and was not completed until the 17th century.

The church of Agios Efstathios is the centre of this complex, surrounded by the churches of Agios Anargyros, Agios Sozon and Agia Anastasia, topped by the church of Mary. These churches were not constructed all at once, but through the centuries.
