Overview

Drukgyal was one of the four principle defense fortresses. It was built by Tenzin Drukdra in 1649 at the behest of Ngawang Namgyal, Zhabdrung Rinpoche, to commemorate the victory over an invasion from Tibet. Now in ruins, you can see the ruins of giant walls, charred gigantic wooden posts, beams and watch towers here. The Dzong was used as a summer residence by the Ringpung Rabdey and was burnt in 1951.
