Originally built in 1672, the fort was part of a colonial prison complex. Largely in ruins, this fort has witnessed major political, historical, and social changes. As you enter the fort, you can see the date of construction inscribed on it. There are plenty of other old buildings and a lovely Dutch church around Negombo dated back to the same period.

Embark on a two-hour guided tour of the Old Dutch fort close to the seafront near the lagoon. At the entrance of the fort, you will find the date of its construction. The ground of the fort is now used as a prison and no one is allowed to visit there. There is a ground, called the Esplanade, where cricket matches are played. As you stroll around the Negombo you will see many other old buildings and a lovely Dutch church. The Old Dutch fort goes back to Sri Lanka’s colonial days when the nation was once under the rule of the Portuguese and the Dutch.
